Home Remedies For Premature Greying of Hair
Grey hair has always been seen as a sign of ageing. Strands of silver are considered a dignified way of showing experience and maturity. Men and women have no qualms about showing strands of grey once they reach an appropriate age.
Today, however, hair is seen greying much earlier. Children as young as fifteen and sixteen have strands of grey appearing, and suffer great setbacks as far as their adjustability and self esteem are concerned.
Premature greying of the hair is caused by exposure to harsh conditions like excessive sun exposure, facing increased levels of pollution, and even sitting in air conditioned environments for very ling hours through the day. It has also been found that poor diets can lead to premature greying of the hair. This, along with low levels of melanin in the body can all cause the hair to turn grey before it really should. There are some tips to cure or treat premature greying of hair.
White hair or premature graying of hair is a common site nowadays due to faulty diet and mental worries which are important causes in premature graying of hairs.
Grey Hair - Causes
A faulty diet and mental worries are the two primary causes of premature greying of hair. It is mainly due to the lack of some of the B vitamins, of iron, copper and iodine in the daily diet that this hair disorder is caused at a young age these days. Mental worries produce an extraordinary tension in the skin of the scalp which interferes with the supply of vital nutrition necessary for the health of the hair. Similarly, anxieties, fear, jealousy and failures have adverse effects on the hair. They dry out the scalpular marrow, the vital sap at the root of the hair.
Premature graying of hair can also be a hereditary in nature where very less can be done but other wise there are some natural home remedies which can be used in this condition.
Other causes of premature greying of hair are unclean condition of the scalp which weakens the roots of the hair as the pores are blocked by the collected dirt ; washing the hair with hot water and drying them with electric dryers which emit a blast of hot air ; the use of hair dyes in the earlier stages when the hair have just started greying ; diseases like chronic cold, sinusitis, anaemia, chronic constipation ; and the use of factory- made hair oils, which are generally cleaned with acids and some of the acids have a tendency to remain in the oil. Heredity is another predisposing factor which gives rise to this ailment.

Premature graying of hair can also be due to unhygienic scalp, washing the hairs with hot water, using drier for drying it and use of artificial hair colors.
In a natural course, the natural pigment of the hair tends to disappear and the hair turns grey and finally white. But in premature graying this process is seen in early age if life.
It can also be due to
-Sever illness like typhoid too can start greying of hair.
-Excessive intake of tea, coffee and alcohol.
-Excessive intake of fried and oily foods.
-Excessive intake of spices.
-Excessive intake of sour and acidic foods.
Homemade Remedies
Mix and drink two teaspoons of wheat germ and yeast with buttermilk to prevent grey hair. Mix grated fresh ginger with honey and eat one teaspoon of the mixture every day.
Boil some dried ribbed gourd (i)torai in coconut oil till it turns black. Massage this oil in scalp and hair roots should be massaged into the scalp.
It is most important to take healthy diet. Generous amounts of fruits and vegetables must be added to the diet. Foods like spinach and other foods rich in iron are good for the hair. Mustard and almond oils are good for the hair, as is hibiscus.
Also rub Indian gooseberry (Amla) on the scalp regularly to help turn grey hair black. Also, massage the hair with a mixture of lemon juice and coconut oil every day.
Liberal intake of curry leaves is considered beneficial in preventing premature greying of hair. These have the property to give vitality and strength to hair roots. New hair roots that grow are healthier with normal pigment. The leaves can be used in the form of chutney or these may be squeezed in butter- milk or lassi. When the leaves are boiled in coconut oil, the oil forms an excellent hair tonic to stimulate hair growth and bring back hair pigmentation.
Boil some curry leaves in coconut oil and apply in scalp and hair roots.
Avoid exposing the hair directly to harsh conditions. Wear some protective covering for the hair if you are stepping out in the sun or in polluted environments. Avoid standing or sitting too close to air condition vents.
The vitamins considered useful in guarding against premature greying of hair are pantothenic acid, para-aminobenzoic acid (paba), inositol. The minimum daily requirement of these vitamins appears to be 10 mg of pantothenic acid, 100 mg of para-aminobenzoic acid, and 2 gm of inositol. To obtain satisfactory results, all three of these vitamins belonging to the B group should be supplied at one time, preferably in a form which supplies all the B vitamins, such as yeast and liver. The three anti-greying-hair vitamins can also be produced in the intestinal tract by bacteria. Thus, taking a sufficient quantity of yoghurt daily and a tablespoonful of yeast before each meal is an excellent remedy for the prevention and treatment of premature greying of hair. If one wishes to take tablets of calcium pantothenate and para-aminobenzoic acid (paba), they should be taken in addition to the yeast and yoghurt, and not as a substitute for them.
Another important aspect is stress. Stress has been known to cause greying of hair. Spend some time in meditation or some form of relaxation. Also try and get adequate sleep at night as rest is also important for the hair.
Another good home remedy is to prepare a mixture of two teaspoons of henna powder, three teaspoons of coffee, two teaspoons of basil juice, one teaspoon of yogurt, one teaspoon of fenugreek seed, and three teaspoons of mint juice. Mix all of these ingredients to create a paste and apply it to the hair. Then shampoo the hair two hours after application.
The butter made from cow’s milk has the property to prevent premature greying of hair. A small roll may be taken internally and a little quantity may be massaged into the hair root twice a week. Ribbed gourd, known as torai in the vernacular, boiled in coconut oil is another effective remedy for premature greying of hair. Pieces of this vegetable should be dried in the shade. These dried pieces should be soaked in coconut oil and kept aside for three or four days. The oil should then be boiled till the solid is reduced to a blackened residue. Thisoil should be massaged into the scalp. It will help enrich the hair roots and restore pigment to the hair.
Amaranth is another effective home remedy for hair disorders. Application of the fresh juice of the leaves of this vegetable helps the hair to retain its black colour and prevents it from premature greying. It also helps the growth of the hair and keeps it soft.
Devitalising foods such as white flour, refined sugar and all products made from them, soft drinks, pastries, jams and jellies should be avoided. These foods take away energy, cause wrinkles, unattractive skin, grey hair, and premature old age.
Grate some fresh ginger. Mix with honey and place it in a jar. Eat 1 tea spoon everyday.
Massage your hairs with coconut oil and lemon juice everyday.
Mix 1 tablespoon of table salt to a cup of strong black tea without milk. Massage this water on the scalp. wash your hair after an hour.
Make a paste of 2 tspn henna powder, 1 tspn yogurt, 1 tsp fenugreek (methi seed powder, 3 tspn coffee, 2 tspn basil juice and 3 tspn mint juice and apply to the hair. Wash hair with shampoo after 3 hours.
Massage your scalp and hair with butter made from cow milk twice a week.
Chemical Hair Dyes
If too much of your hair has gone grey, it is best to use a hair dye to cover the problem. These dyes coat the hair, either permanently or temporarily. These dyes color the hair, either black or to match the individual’s natural hair color.
Climate, soap, season, or water can’t affect the effectiveness of hair dyes. These dyes contain chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide and mercury. They can easily be purchased on the open market.
Hair Dye Application
The individual should keep a few things in mind before applying hair dye. Before dyeing the hair, remember to wash it thoroughly to remove grease and dust.
Afterwards, apply the hair dye with a brush. After a short period of time, wash the hair thoroughly to remove excess hair dye. Dyeing the hair can at times leave black spots on the fingers, nails or sideburns, but they can be easily removed with soap.
Hair Dye : The paste of henna leaves, boiled in coconut oil to get a darkish oil, can be used as a hair dye to blacken grey hair. The paste itself can be applied to the hair and washed away after a few hours to dye the grey hair. Washing the hair with concentrated tea extract twice a week is also considered useful in colouring grey hair to brown or black.
